Summary: | Multiparameter data collection is becoming increasingly common in many scientific disciplines. The need exists for integrated displays to enable the scientist to see the combined information, some of which may not be adequately perceived or may not be perceived at all when viewed individually. In order for such displays to succeed, they must exploit the visual perceptual capabilities as much as possible. We present a new technique that harnesses color and texture perception to create integrated displays of two-dimensional "imagelike" multiparameter distributions. The power of the new technique is demonstrated by an example of a synthesized dataset comparing it with several other proposed techniques. We discuss the nature of studies required to measure objectively and accurately the effectiveness of such displays. |
