Comment on "Experimental Study of a Normal Shock/Homogeneous Turbulence Interaction"

In the original work by Barre et al. (1996), the authors point out that the measured amplification ratio is close to the theoretical value of about 1.5 predicted by Ribner's (1954) theory. In the present Comment, Ribner notes that the authors seem unaware of a much larger later paper (Ribner, 1...

Description
Summary:In the original work by Barre et al. (1996), the authors point out that the measured amplification ratio is close to the theoretical value of about 1.5 predicted by Ribner's (1954) theory. In the present Comment, Ribner notes that the authors seem unaware of a much larger later paper (Ribner, 1987) that extends the predictions to changes in spectra. After proposing certain changes in the data reduction method, Ribner points out that, after reworking, the results of Barre et al. are essentially in agreement with his later work. It is also noted that the experimental results of Barre et al. are compatible with the direct numerical simulations of shock-turbulence interaction of Lee et al. (1993). (AIAA)
