Description
Summary:The concept of lang socialization is developed in terms of socialization through use of lang, & socialization to use lang. Theories of socialization that have led to the study of lang socialization are reviewed. The study of lang socialization & the study of lang acquisition are distinguished. The socializing role of ordinary conversation for young children is discussed. Some recent studies of baby talk are described & cross-cultural differences in lang socialization patterns are outlined. It is shown that young children's conversational activities vary in ways that are related to the beliefs, values, & social order of their culture. 241 References. B. Annesser Murray
