Description
Summary:This article first describes the two main Parisian libraries (ENS and Sorbonne) where registers have been found of almost 200 loans taken out by Durkheim between 1902 and 1917, but especially concentrated (67%) between 1902 and 1906. We first set out to show the distribution of his loans according to subject, before trying to suggest their uses. Durkheim mainly seems to have borrowed books and journals dealing with science 4 of education. He had to construct his major course on the history of secondary education in France, and took out many loans for this. The records also point to loans made to prepare his courses on religion (1906/1907), on pragmatism (1913) and on German imperialism (1914). It can be seen that Durkheim mainly borrowed books for his numerous lecture courses, rather than for his writing and research on religion’s ‘formes élémentaires’.
