Summary: | Based on a careful review of the theoretical and empirical literature on comparative gender studies, this article aims to contribute to the ongoing debate about the relationship between women's labour market participation and the gender-specific division of household work. Its main finding is that there is a persistence of the gendered division of unpaid work despite the erosion of the male breadwinner family model in Spain. The empirical analysis is based on a comparison of family models in Europe as well as trends in the gendered division of family labour. Comparative data from different European statistical sources are analysed descriptively. A more complex statistical analysis is carried out for Spain on the basis of a survey carried out by the Sociological Research Centre (CIS) in 2010. The article provides some interesting empirical evidence that could contribute to a better understanding of the dynamics of gender and family change in Spain. |
