Summary: | This paper reviews and comments upon practical aspects of the AI technique, male reproductive physiology, semen physiology, female reproductive physiology, oviduct physiology and the interaction of spermatozoa with the oviduct environment which influence the success of breeding by artificial insemination.
It is considered that the fertility level can be affected by factors associated with the male in two ways: by inherent or physiological factors determining the quality of spermatozoa and by the type of semen collected artificially. Evidence to support these suggestions is given.
Other factors associated with the procedure of insemination and the female may influence fertility, e.g. the number of spermatozoa inseminated, the deposition of semen in the oviduct, timing of insemination, the changing oviduct environment associated with the reproductive state of the female, the development of possible immunity against spermatozoa in the female and the loss of embryo viability due to aged spermatozoa. |
