Summary:Several letters received from the University Professor Dr. Gavril Istrate are presented and interpreted. I met Professor Gavril Istrate in 1989, on the occasion of some cultural events in Iași, dedicated to the Eminescu Centenary. I initiated and published in the magazine “Orizont” from Timișoara a series of interviews with eminescologists. I also proposed to Gavril Istrate to answer the questions and he accepted. Since then, a constant correspondence has begun. Gavril Istrate was a PhD professor, PhD supervisor, at the Faculty of Letters of the University „Al. I. Cuza” from Iași. Studies on the history of the Romanian literary language have been synthesized in the volumes Romanian Language. Studies and articles (1970) and The origin of the Romanian literary language (1981). Along with the image of the renowned linguist, the letters also highlight a feature of Professor Gavril Istrate, namely sociability, the joy of meeting people by participating in various scientific events. The letters also provide information related to cultural history.
