Summary:There are various causes for the occurrence of calques in a language. One of them is linguistic interference. The aim of the paper is to analyse the calques from French in the works of Matoš and Krleža and to examine the role of the authors in the creation of the calques. The analysed calques prove that linguistic interference is a very important factor in the creation of calques, especially those of the syntactic type. The number of calques found is relatively small compared to the amount of literary material analysed, but they certainly speak of the word-making art of their creators, as well as of the centuries-old tradition of cultural and linguistic connections between Croatia and France.
