Description
Summary:Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease affecting 1% of the population over 60 years of age. The interest in medical marijuana and cannabinoids as medical treatment has increased the past years, following the legalization of the plant in several countries. The purpose of this article is to review existing literature to investigate whether cannabinoids can have a role in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease in the future. We did a systematic search in PubMed and used title, abstract and several inclusion- and exclusion criteria to identify relevant systematic reviews. These were read in full text to identify relevant clinical studies. A total of 10 articles were included: 3 systematic reviews and 7 clinical studies. The included studies used different types of cannabinoids and methods of administration. Among the included studies, one found an effect on motor dysfunction, and another study found an effect on L-DOPA induced dyskinesia. Three studies reported effect on non-motor symptoms like sleep and anxiety. One study investigated potential effects on neural degeneration and found no effect. Several studies also reported no significant effect on either motor- or non-motor symptoms. Mild side-effects were reported in some of the studies. Cannabinoids may have an effect on both motor- and non-motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease. The included studies are small and of short duration, and we need more extensive clinical studies to investigate the issue more conclusively.
