Summary:This study analyses the relationship between low self-esteem and problem behaviour, social competence and academic achievement among students in lower secondary schools in Norway. 2164 students in 11 lower secondary schools filled in a self-evaluation scale on self-esteem (Harter 1999). Teachers evaluated the same students using the problem-behaviour-scale, social competence scale and academic achievement scale developed by Gresham and Elliott (1990). Correlations were computed between each factor from the scales. This study provides further knowledge to the evidence of the relationship between self-esteem and problem behaviour and social and academic competence. It is discussed whether there are differences between the strength of the relationships in Norway and US.
