description This thesis deals with development of a high sensitivity Three-Axis Magnetometer instrument suitable for scientific measurement on the ICI-5 rocket campaign. Experience from a previous design is used with the goal to improve and replace that design as a three-axis magnetometer used for attitude determination. Instrument design, simulation of supporting circuits and test results are reviewed. The instrument is designed using high sensitivity one-axis and two-axis chips from Honeywell, namely the HMC1001 and HMC1002. Custom built analogue support circuits are made in order to increase sensitivity and deal with offset voltage problems. Simulation and design of these circuits are covered extensively in this thesis. A control system doing the data handling is implemented in FPGA. A working prototype has been tested and verified, albeit problems with the HMC1001 chips are not resolved and need further investigation.
