Description
Summary:Bald‐faced hornets build massive aerial nests tended by female workers. In late summer, they rear virgin queens. In their Communication on page 11618 ff., R. G. Linington, R. Britton, G. Gries et al. report that these queens produce sex pheromone components, termed maculatic acids, that attract males. This first insight into the mechanisms underlying sexual signaling in bald‐faced hornets provides impetus to identify sex pheromones in other yellowjackets, a group of social insects of vast economic and ecological importance (picture: S. McCann and S. Takács).
