Summary: | Hydrocelluloses were treated with sodium chlorite solutions at various pH values at room temperature as well as at the boil. In some cases the treatment was repeated several times. Copper number and acid value of the samples before and after the treatment were determined. Regardless of the pH, temperature, and the number of chlorous acid treatments, it was not possible to oxidize all the potential aldehyde groups present in the hydrocelluloses. However, a substantial portion of these groups were oxidized to carboxyl groups by the treatment. |
