Description
Summary:On the prebiotic earth, the earliest replicating molecules were likely made of RNA. Several lines of evidence suggest that life emerged on the surface exposed to substantial UV radiation from the young sun. In this study, UV damage decreased the activity and folding of functional RNA, but the rate and extent of damage were highly variable, depending on both sequence and structure. Exposure to UV radiation would have represented an important selective pressure within the emerging RNA world. More information can be found in the full paper by I. A. Chen and R.
