Summary: | A planar antenna based on the open‐loop standing‐wave radiator following a fractal design is presented in this paper. The proposed antenna operates at 2.45 GHz with circular polarization and directional radiation, and is designed over an FR‐4 substrate. Design methodology and optimization of the structure are detailed. Simulated and experimental results are presented with good agreement between them. Due to its radiation characteristics, reduced dimensions, and low weight, the proposed antenna is an excellent candidate for CubeSat applications. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
