Description
Summary:Salicylaldehyde–formaldehyde polymers were prepared with the use of oxalic acid, formic acid, sulfuric acid, and sodium hydroxide as catalysts. A non‐catalyzed polymer was prepared also at an elevated temperature with the use of a pressure bomb. Metallic chelates of the oxalic acid‐catalyzed polymer were prepared with various metallic cations. Each of the polymers was examined for solubility characteristics and for thermal stability. The chelates were similarly examined. The molecular weights of the polymers were in the 700–800 range as determined by freezing point depression. Chelated polymers were stable in air at temperatures which were about 50°C. higher than the decomposition temperature of the corresponding nonchelated polymers.
