Summary: | NO−2 and NO−3 are quantitatively reduced to NO for chemiluminescence detection in mildly acidic vanadium(III) solution. Nanomolar detection limits are obtained with this method. Variation in application of the method allows for nitrite-only analysis, nitrite plus nitrate, or nitrite and nitrate in the same sample using a temperature-cycling routine. Analysis rates of 2 to 4 mm per sample are obtained. Because of the mild acidity conditions of the vanadium(III) reductor solution, application can be made to the analysis of nitrate and nitrite in complex sample matrices, such as human fluids, plant material, and food products, without the need for sample pretreatment. This makes the vanadium(III) method superior to many other trace nitrate/nitrite detection methods. |
