Summary: | Asbestos mining dusts which pollute soil surfaces in the area of Thetford Mines, Black Lake and Asbestos, Province of Quebec, contain large amounts of magnesium and iron. In the long run, these mining pollutants reduce total soil microflora; they decrease fungal populations and obligate heterotrophic bacteria, whereas facultative heterotrophic and autotrophic bacteria are enhanced. In short term experiments, the later groups of bacteria increase in number when high doses of asbestos powder were applied, although total number of bacteria remains constant. Other simple Mg formulations reduce bacterial soil populations. Les poussières d'amiante qui polluent la surface des sols dans la région de Thetford Mines, Black Lake et Asbestos, province de Québec, sont riches en magnésium et en fer. Cette pollution minière, à long terme, réduit la microflore totale du sol; elle abaisse les populations de champignons et des bactéries obligatoirement hétérotrophes à l'avantage des populations bactériennes facultativement hétérotrophes et autotrophes qui sont iavorisées. Dans des essais à court terme, ces derniers groupes de bactéries augmentent en nombre lors de l'application massive de poudre d'amiante, alors que le nombre total de bactéries reste constant. D'autres formes plus simples de Mg diminuent les populations bactériennes telluriques. |
