Description
Summary:Possible causes of previously observed high denitrifying activity in solodized solonetz B horizon soils were investigated. A soil that formerly had shown high activity was used, to simulate conditions responsible for high denitrification rates. The effects of various physical pre-treatments and of inorganic and organic amendments on denitrifying activity were assessed. The susceptibility to leaching of organic materials, nitrate and denitrifying bacteria was also studied. The data supported the thesis that high denitrifying activity in B horizons of solodized solonetz soils was caused by highly available organic material leached into the B horizon from the surface soil.
