Description
Summary:The elastic modulus and hardness of a cold-sprayed Al-25Zn metal matrix composite were characterized with the aid of Knoop and Vickers microindentation tests, nanoindentation test, and resonance frequency (RF) analysis. The mechanical properties were compared with the predictions of object-oriented image-based finite element (FE) analysis and related to the microstructural characteristics revealed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The cold-sprayed coating exhibited an isotropic behavior along transversal and longitudinal directions and the predicted elastic modulus closely matched the results from the nanoindentation test. The approach offers a solution to the challenging task to determine the elastic modulus of thin coatings.
