Summary: | Since the first accounts of empyema treatment by Hippocrates of Kos, who pioneered surgical procedures of the chest wall and the emergence of thoracic surgery during the late 19th and early 20th century specifically to develop treatment strategies for tuberculosis, chest wall resection and reconstruction has become a mainstay of septic and oncologic thoracic surgery. Thanks to significant improvements in surgical technique, anesthesiological management, critical care therapy, the advent of antibiotics, and a continuously evolving array of grafts suitable for secondary repair, nowadays even extensive full thickness resection can be performed with acceptable overall morbidity and mortality. We present an overview of current indications for chest wall resection and list materials suitable for repair, ranging from synthetic meshes to tissue-engineered grafts. |
