Description
Summary:In this research, the nitride titanium layer was deposited on AISI 316L stainless steel and the adhesion of the optimum layer had been evaluated. The electrophoretic deposition process was carried out with optimum composition and under the variation of diverse voltages of 20, 25, and 30 V and time of deposition of 3, 5, 7, and 10 min. Sintering at 1200°C within 2 and 4 h was applied on the achieved nitride titanium coatings to improve adhesion of the layer. The obtained layers were characterized by X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy. Results show that the sample achieved at 25 V within 5 min has uniform layer on the surface of the substrate. Adhesion strength was evaluated by performing Rockwell C hardness test according to VDI 3198 guideline on the optimum sample with uniform layer and the crack propagation was studied by using SEM. Results show that although there is a ductile feature of the layer in macroscale, it has brittle feature in microscale and acceptable adhesion strength of as-sintered sample.
