Summary: | A multi-functional hybrid hydrogel film was prepared using gelatin and polyvinylpyrrolidone by solvent-casting method with gallic acid, a polyol used as an active ingredient. The film showed excellent mechanical property, sensory responsiveness along with food shelf life enhancing properties like antibacterial, antioxidant, moisture absorbing and UV radiation barrier. The film can calorimetrically detect the presence of ammonia and copper sulfate which may be formed as adulterant by product. As relative humidity increased, film showed linear increment in moisture content and the intrinsic moisture absorbing property of PVP help to avoid the use of any plasticizer in the film. FTIR spectra showed soft interactions between the gallic acid and amphiphilic individual polymer components, resulted in the formation of a slightly yellowish but transparent film with optimum water vapour transpiration rate (WVTR). The transparency and visually detecting sensory property of the film without the use of any natural extract or synthetic dye, in addition to the mentioned other features made the prepared film unique. |
