Summary: | Caffeoylquinic acids (CQAs) are a phenolic compounds widely distributed in various plant-derived products. They are formed via reactions of esterification of caffeic and quinic acids, which means that they constitute a group of high structural diversity, the reason why they have received an increasing interest from medicinal chemists for the search of new therapeutic agents. The intake of CQA enriched aliments have been positively correlated to health benefits since these molecules act as potent antioxidants which make them interesting candidates for the research of novel drugs against oxidative stress-related human pathologies. Recent clinical trials have demonstrated the effectiveness of these molecules in the prevention/treatment of cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular, and inflammatory diseases. In this review, we focus on the progress in CQAs chemistry and we highlight the new insights regarding their biological effect and their bioavailability based on the recent peer-reviewed published works in the most known scientific databases. |
