Summary:The most destructive stored pests of pulses are bruchine beetles or cowpea weevils. In blackgram [ Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper], it results in significant losses. Therefore, one of the main objectives for breeders is to breed blackgram for bruchine resistance. Nevertheless, only a small number of blackgram cultivated group resistance sources were characterised and identified. Less research has been done on the genetics of resistance among Vigna spp., particularly in blackgram regarding C. maculatus resistance. In this study, we therefore tested the genetic control over the inheritance of seed resistance to C. maculatus . The genotype TU68 is used as donor parent to incorporate bruchine resistance and evaluated inheritance among the various generations of F 1 and F 2 from the cross combinations of MDU1 × TU68, VBN6 × TU68 and VBN8 × TU68. F 1 s derived from all cross combinations were resistant against bruchine beetles. Hence, the resistance in blackgram is governed by dominant gene. The derived F 2 generation among the cross MDU1 × TU68 had digenic complimentary gene action with 9 (resistant): 7 (susceptible) ratio. However, F 2 derived population of VBN6 × TU68 and VBN8 × TU68 had digenic duplicate gene action with 15 (resistant): 1 (susceptible) ratio. Hence, the present study revealed that seed damage against C. maculatus has dominant gene action with varying segregating pattern depending upon the parents involved.
