Summary:Some aspects of micro- and surface-analytical beam techniques for studies of individual airborne particulates are reviewed. Applications of the microanalysis techniques of electron spectroscopic imaging, secondary ion imaging and proton induced x-ray-micro analysis (micro-PIXE) for the characterization of individual particles in environmental samples and chemically modified asbestos fibres are discussed.
