Description
Summary:Previous work on the measurement of the crack growth rate in graphites under low loading rate (fatigue) and high loading rate (impact) conditions have been performed using a wide variety of test specimen geometries. The resulting data and growth-rate laws are very variable and difficult to compare with each other. The present paper reports results for two types of reactor graphites under both fatigue and impact loading, but with tests undertaken using a common specimen geometry. Care has been taken to measure the applied load in a meaningful way by comparing it with the static fracture load for each specimen. The resulting data have been fitted to the relevant growth-rate laws and compared in the same form to the results of other workers. Limitations to the meaning of parameters in these laws are discussed. It is shown that the data obtained here can be used to predict endurance values in good agreement with direct measurements of cycles to failure.
