Description
Summary:Experimental investigations of the power requirement for mechanically agitating shear thickening solid—liquid suspensions are reported. The limitations of using conventional rheological data for the power prediction procedure are demonstrated. An alternative method is proposed involving the replacement of the bob of the viscometer by a small impeller; this gives a more useful “flow curve” for power requirement predictions in mixing devices with a similar geometry. The effect of an unsteady component on the shear stresses is also studied; it is found that, in some cases, the unsteady flow generates stresses up to fourfold higher than those of simple steady shear in the shear thickening region.
