Summary:A new, two-parameter analytical solution for the dimensionless concentration profile in steady-state, simultaneous reaction and diffusion in an isothermal slab is derived for the general reversible second-order reaction, which includes nine different specific kinetic schemes. The dimensionless concentration profile and internal effectiveness factor are determined solely in terms of two dimensionless parameters: a Thiele modulus, Φ 1st and “second-order modulus”,ψ. The analysis provides semi-quantitative conditions for both diffusion-free and diffusion-limited behavior. Also revealed are results, not initially apparent, concerning the asymptotic behavior of the effectiveness factor, bounds on the mid-plane concentration, and an interrelationship between the two parameters and their meaning.
