Description
Summary:The reactions of vanadium and cobalt clusters, generated by laser vaporization, with ethylene and acetylene were studied by using a fast flow reactor. In the reaction of small V n with C 2H 4, the dehydrogenated products V n C 2, V n C 2H 2 increasing the cluster number, the intensities of those products decrease monotonically, while those of V n C 2H 4 increase. Similar results were observed in the reaction of V n with C 2H 2. On the other hand, only non-dehydrogenated products were observed in the reaction of small Co n with C 2H 4, but for larger clusters ( n ⩾ 9) the dehydrogenated products Co n C 2 and Co n C 2H 2 appeared. The contrast between the reaction of V n and Co n is related to the heats of adsorption and the structure of adsorbed products.
