Summary: | An overview of the possibilities for the electrochemical removal of protecting groups is given and it is concluded that electrochemical methods might be very appropriate and convenient for carrying out selective deprotection; there is, however, a need for further work to demonstrate conditions where yields are truly >99%, to define convenient procedures and to use to the full the potential of electrochemistry to give selective cleavage even when the molecule is polyprotected. |
