A note concerning the use of bis-acetyl-acetonato-iron(II) and other acetyl-acetonato-iron complexes as initiators, or initiator-components, for vinyl polymerization

The previously reported activity of bis-acetyl-acetonato-iron(II) as an initiator of vinyl polymerization is now believed to be spurious and attributable to the presence of an unidentified ferric complex. The spurious complex and Fe III (Acac) 3 are active initiators for methyl methacrylate but Fe II(Acac) 2 is not. Criteria for the correct identification of complexes in initiating systems based on acetyl-acetonato-iron complexes are discussed. L'activité préalablement rapportée du bis-acétyl-acétonato-fer (II) en tant qu'initiateur de la polymérisation du vinyle est maintenant considérée être falsifiée et attribuable à la présence d'un complexe ferrique non-identifié. Le faux complexe et le Fe III (Acac) 3 sont des initiateurs actifs pour le méthylméthacrylate tandis que le Fe II (Acac) 2 ne l'est pas. On discute des critéres pour l'identification correcte de complexes dans les systèmes initiateurs à base de complexes acétyl-acétonato-fer. Ora si ha ragione di credere che la precedentemente comunicata attività del ferro(II) bis-acetil-acetonato come iniziatore di polimerizzazione vinilica non corresponda al vero e che invece essa sia da attribuire alla presenza di un complesso ferrico non identificato. Quest'ultimo e il Fe III (Acac) 3 sono attivi iniziatori per il metacrilato metilico, mentre il Fe II (Acac) 2 non lo è. Si discutono criteri per la corretta identificazione di complessi in sistemi iniziatori basati su complessi al ferro acetil-acetonato. Die kürzlich mitgeteilte Aktivität von Bis-acetyl-acetonato-Eisen(II) als ein Initiator der Vinylpolymerisation wird jetzt als ein Artefakt angesehen und der Gegenwart eines noch nicht identifizierten Ferrikomplexes zugeschrieben. Dieser Komplex und Fe III (Acac) 3 sind aktive Initiatoren für Methylmethacrylat, dagegen Fe II (Acac) 2 nicht. Kriterien für die genaue Identifizierung von Komplexen in Initiatorsystemen basierend auf Acetylacetonato-Eisenkomplexen werden diskutiert.
