Summary:An investigation has been made of effects on polystyrene films of exposure to electrical discharges in air, oxygen and nitrogen. By i.r. spectroscopy, many oxygen-containing groups and compounds (C=O, COC, etc.) were found in polystyrene film after exposure to electrical discharges in air. End-groups were also found to increase in number. Measurements of molecular weight revealed that crosslinking occurred simultaneously with degradation. These processes were accelerated by oxygen. A study has been made of a gel-fraction resulting from crosslinking; the variation of gel-fraction with time was followed. The gel-fraction was found to consist mainly of polystyrene molecules linked by etheric or keto-etheric bridges; it has practically the same composition as the gel-fraction obtained when polysytrene is kept in pure ozone. On a examiné des films de polystyrène qui avaient été soumis à des décharges électriques dans l'air, dans l'oxygène et dans l'azote. Par spectroscopie i.r., on a trouvé que les films de polystyrène soumis à des décharges électriques dans l'air renfermaient de nombreux groupes et composés contenant de l'oxygène (C=O, COC, etc.). On a également trouvé que le nombre des bouts de chaîne augmentait. Des mesures de masses moléculaires ont montré qu'une réticulation se produisait simultanément à la dégradation. Ces processus sont accélérés par l'oxygène. On a étudié la fraction de gel résultant de la réticulation; on a suivi la variation de cette fraction avec le temps. On a trouvé que la fraction de gel était principalement constituée de molécules de polystyrène reliées entre elles par des ponts éthers ou céto-éthers; elle a pratiquement la même composition que la fraction de gel obtenue quand le polystyrène est maintenu dans l'ozone pur.
