Summary:A new chiral smectic side chain polymer has been synthesized showing a ferroelectric Sm C ∗ phase between the isotropic and smectic B phases. The clearing phase transition (on heating) depends on the d.c. voltage applied. This behaviour could be explained by some theoretical consideration. Pyroelectric measurements give the maximum value of spontaneous polarization for the polymer P s ∼- 4.0 nC/cm 2.
