The effect of ethionine on tumor growth, content and composition of fat of livers and tumor cells, and glycogen content of liver

Summary: | Ethionine, 0.1 per cent in the diet, inhibited the growth of the Krebs ascites tumor in mice by about 30 per cent. It caused a marked increase in the fat content of the tumor cells and the liver, and altered the composition of the fat. The changes in the composition of the fat were (
a) a decrease in the phospholipin and fatty acid fractions and (
b) an increase in the neutral fat fraction. The glycogen content of the livers was reduced to a negligible amount. The effect of ethionine on the fat content and composition was more marked in females than in males, although tumor growth was inhibited equally. |
