Summary:On both a model and a full scale device of a hammer mill, the residence time distribution (RTD) of crushed grain has been studied. Radiotracers were used for the experimental verification of the RTD model on a pilot scale device and for the determination of the rotating grist layer quantity in the full scale device. Three radionuclides ( 198Au, 82Br and 24Na) have been tested (with the use of screen analysis and autoradiography) to find the best tracer for the crushing of corn grains.
