Summary: | The theory underlying the operation of a coincidence time-of-flight mass spectrometer is first developed. Unlike other time-of-flight mass spectrometers, the coincidence time-of-flight mass spectrometer does not use a pulsed ion beam. Instead, the arrival of a single ion coincident with a suitably delayed electron, is recorded. The construction of such an instrument is described, in which ionization is effected by a monoenergetic photon beam from the 584 Ă… helium line. Although the resolving power is low, recognizable spectra have been obtained. It is to be used in an investigation of some elementary processes including the simpler aspects of ion-production. The means of improving the resolution are clearly understood. |
