Summary:This paper presents a review of investigations on non-linear stabilities of thin shallow elastic shells of revolution, beginning with von Kármán's original 1910 paper on the subject. Altogether 83 papers were reviewed. The theoretical foundations and the new methods and new concepts that were introduced over the years are discussed. Most of the work is not well known outside the People's Republic of China.
