Summary: | Experiments were performed to evaluate the influence of the nature of collection on the retention efficiency of impactors for particles of polystyrene latex between 0.79 and 1.1 μm dia. Results indicate that collection characteristics of impactors are significantly influenced by the nature of their collection surfaces. With oil-coated plates, collection efficiency curves rise sharply from 0 to 100%. However, with uncoated plates, efficiency curves rise to a value of 30–50% and drop sharply thereafter. The use of glass fiber filters as collection surfaces reduces particle bounce significantly, but modified impactor collection characteristics. Whatman filters do not reduce bounce appreciably. As the precipitate layer thickness increases, collection efficiency increases, resulting in a decrease in the stage cut point. |
