Summary: | Analysis of the formalism developed by Fletcher for the nucleation on particles with active sites has shown this theory to have some limitations. An attempt is made to remove these limitations. The ice formation on an active site has been shown to run by several stages. Expressions for the changing free energy in each stage have been derived. A general expression for the nucleation rate has been obtained for particles with active sites. The expressions for the nucleation rate on non-uniform and uniform surfaces derived by Fletcher have been obtained from the above mentioned general expression as special cases. |
