Summary: | After introducing some general concepts of cellulose acetate membranes (CAMs) and gelled cellulose acetate membranes (GCAMs and their use for electrophoretic separations, an overview on CAM- and GCAM-based protocols for conventional electrophoresis, isoelectric focusing (IEF) and isotachophoresis (ITP) is given. Examples for each of the three methodologies are described and discussed. Further, some innovative applications of Cellogel in electrophoretic protocols are presented: (i) the reuse of GCAMs already used for the conventional electrophoretic analysis of some erythrocyte enzymes; and (ii) the transfer of electrophoretically separated proteins from an IEF polyacrylamide gel to a GCAM, without impairing the functioning of the gel. |
