Summary: | Thermodynamical and statistical approaches which supplement each other are offered in order to gain a better understanding of the phenomena encountered with so-called microemulsions. To reduce the complexity connected with ternary systems, only small amounts of surfactants are considered but this does not involve an essential loss of generality. The treatment elucidates a number of phenomena and permits the relationships between different experimental observations to be realized. In particular, the surfactant phase, the phase inversion temperature (PIT), and the hydrophilelipophile balance (HLB) are analyzed in light of the present theory. Moreover, statistically derived solubility curves of surfactants in binary mixtures of apolar/polar liquids show very satisfactory agreement with experimental findings in the literature. |
