Summary: | Stable dispersions of spherical and monodisperse particles of poly(methyl methacrylate) were prepared with use of dispersion polymerization in cyclohexane. The dispersions were stabilized by the presence of surface layers of poly(alkyl methacrylate) groups bound chemically to polymer particles. Measurable zeta-potential resulted from the adsorption of oil-soluble ionic surfactants on particles. The sign of zeta-potential depended on the kind of surfactants. It was found from the zeta-potential measurement that the adsorption of Mn or Co salt of alkylcarbonyl ethane sulfonic acid on the particles is specific and difficult to be desorbed compared with Na or Ca salt. The stronger adsorption of Mn or Co salt was considered to result from the strong coordinating interaction between the trasition metal ion and carbonyl group on particles. The strong interaction was also confirmed from another interaction experiment. |
