Summary: | The disk centrifuge-photosedimentometer offers a rapid and convenient method for obtaining information on particle-size distributions for a variety of dispersed systems. Although the output of this device may be used directly for relatively narrow distributions or very large particles, many systems of interest require treatment of the data to account for variations in the optical properties of the particles with size before a meaningful distribution can be obtained. The importance of the optical correction is demonstrated using results from mixtures of monodispersed silver bromide sols and of polystyrene latices with diameters in the range 0.1 to 1 μm. Both the exact formulation of the correction factor and an approximation useful for particles with low relative refractive indices are described. |
