Summary: | Mixed colloidal dispersions were obtained by precipitation of iron oxide (hematite) in the presence of preformed spherical titania particles (0.44 μm in modal diameter) of narrow size distribution. It was shown that, depending on conditions, freshly precipitated hematite can (a) exist as independent stable particles, (b) heterocoagulate with titania, (c) surface nucleate and grow on titania particles, or (d) form a film on the latter. The interfacial reactions can be affected by additives (e.g., heteropoly acids) which adsorb on preformed solids. Where possible the results were interpreted in terms of the theory of unlike particles. |
