Summary: | The diffusion of pyrene, solubilized in three surfactant micelles (sodium dodecyl sulfate, Brij 35, and tetradecylbenzenedimethylammonium chloride), across microporous membranes was studied experimentally and compared with theoretical calculations. The calculations were based on a model that accounts for the flux of free and micelle-solubilized compounds. When attractive interactions existed between the solubilizate and the surfactant head group, the solute delivery predicted by the model was lower than that of the experimental results. It is proposed that when specific solute/surfactant interactions exist, additional diffusion processes (e.g., monomer facilitated or surface diffusion), which were neglected in the model, make significant contributions to the transport of the solute across the membrane. |
