Description
Summary:The morphology of the VLS grown Zn crystals from Zn-Bi monotectic droplets with increasing growth temperature changes from pencil-shaped to icosahedron through a disk-like form which is not observed in eutectic systems. These morphological changes were explained by both the surface tension of the liquid and the “faceted to non-faceted” transition of the interface between the liquid and solid. It was also found in this monotectic system that the surface tension and this transition temperature were determined mainly by the growth temperature and by the concentration of the liquid, respectively. This transition temperature agrees with the “roughening transition temperature” of the present authors' model reported previously [1].
