Summary:The effect of dodecylammonium chloride (DDACl) on the growth of calcium oxalate crystals from high ionic strength solutions has been investigated. At DDACl concentrations below the critical micelle concentration (CMC) adsorption of dodecylammonium ion (DDA +) at the crystal surface was insufficient to affect the crystallization. In the presence of DDACl at a concentration equal to or higher than the CMC a strong inhibition of the crystal growth is observed. It is caused by strong DDA + adsorption on some crystal faces. Furthermore, it was shown that the rate control mechanism changed from exponential rate law (in the control system and at the concentration of DDACl < CMC) to the linear rate law (at DDACl concentrations #62; CMC).
