Valence states and luminescence of europium in BaFBr:Eu crystals

Eu 2+ and Eu 3+ contents in BaFBr:Eu phosphor were determined by ESR and photoluminescence. Summary:Eu 2+ and Eu 3+ contents in BaFBr:Eu phosphor were determined by ESR and photoluminescence. In addition to the transitions of Eu 2+ 4f←4f5d and Eu 3+ 4f←f 24, the excitation and emission of Eu 3+ CTS were found. The enhancement of X-ray luminescence of Eu 2+ by the coexisting Eu 3+ ions is explained as; Eu 3+ CTS→ Eu 3+ CTS *→ Eu 2+* + hv Eu2+ and Eu 2+ + h +2←Eu 3+.
