Comment on: room-temperature line emission at 1.2 μm from chromium-activated barium ortho-titanate (J. Lumin. 59 (1994) 113)

The sharp line luminescence around 1.2 μm reported in [J. Lumin. 59 (1994) 113] for chromium doped Ba 2TiO 4 is shown to be due to a Mn 5+ impurity. Cr 4+ doped Ba 2TiO 4 exhibits a broad band luminescence at 20 K with a lifetime τ ⩽ 7 μs.
